Top-Rated Resident Evil Games – Our definitive ranking from least to legendary

The Evolution of Resident Evil

Resident Evil 2 Remake is right around the corner, bringing the 1998 survival horror classic into the modern era with a complete reimagining of Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield’s debut adventure. However, let’s not forget the lasting legacy that Resident Evil has left in its wake since its inception more than 20 years ago, even if some entries have been far, far better than others.

Ranking the Best Resident Evil Games

To celebrate the upcoming release of Capcom’s latest zombie-slaying experience, Trusted Reviews has ranked our favourite Resident Evil games from worst to best. If you don’t agree, you’re probably playing it wrong. Joke – we love you really. This list will only be covering the series’ main entries with a couple of exceptions, so don’t expect the likes of Survivor, Outbreak or Operation Raccoon City awaiting below.

Resident Evil 6: Pushing Boundaries

Seen as a low point for the series, Resident Evil 6 was Capcom’s attempt to twist the series into an action blockbuster more akin to Gears of War, leaving its survival horror roots dead and buried. Boasting four distinct campaigns, it’s difficult to fault Resi 6 for its ambition, bringing back an ensemble cast of characters we know and love. However, the plot and set-pieces fell short of expectations, leading to a polarizing reception among fans.

Resident Evil 5: Action-Packed Adventure

Resident Evil 5 was focused on action rather than horror, delivering a full-blown shooter experience set in the scorching plains of Africa. The game balanced all-out action with suspenseful horror moments, although playing with a friend in co-operative mode lessened the scare factor. Despite some missteps, Resident Evil 5 provided a fun and engaging adventure for fans of the series.

Resident Evil Zero: A Prequel Adventure

Utilizing innovative gameplay mechanics, Resident Evil Zero served as a prequel to the Spencer Mansion Incident with a focus on switching between characters to explore new areas and solve puzzles. The game offered a compelling survival horror experience, despite some uneven elements, and showcased the potential for storytelling within the Resident Evil universe.

Resident Evil 4: A Game-Changing Reboot

Resident Evil 4 revolutionized the series by introducing a first-person perspective and returning to its survival horror roots. The game's blend of terror and tension, along with the Baker Family's eerie estate, created a truly immersive experience for players. The addition of VR support heightened the horror elements, making it a standout entry in the Resident Evil franchise.
